If you have problems understanding what existential psychotherapy actually is, Yalom provides a neat definition: “Existential psychotherapy is a dynamic therapeutic approach that focuses on concerns rooted in existence. Existential psychotherapy = A dynamic therapeutic approach that focuses on concerns rooted in existence . Pamenu, tuomkart paliko didelį įspūdį kaip sklandus praktiškų patarimų ir įžvalgų rinkinys, bet įtariu, kad šįkart iš knygos pasiėmiau gerokai daugiau.

The two modes are different not only because of the format (that is, a group of approximately six to nine members versus a one-to-one setting for existential psychotherapy) but differ fundamentally in their frame of reference. Yalom says that therapists are often either devalued/irrationally feared by clients or overvalued/viewed as more powerful than they actually are. Here, interspersed with examples from his own clinical practice, you’ll find many useful pieces of advice regarding numerous different aspects of psychotherapy. In his study of the life cycle, Erik Erickson described the late life stage of generativity, a post-narcissism era when attention turns from expansion of oneself toward care and concern for succeeding generations.

First published in 2001 – sometime around the author’s 70 th birthday – The Gift of Therapy, as stated by its blurb, is “the culmination of master psychiatrist Dr.And in a discussion of therapist going to their own therapy, Yalom admits to several stints in therapy of his own, including a "nude marathon encounter group" in the sixties. So as to help your patients achieve this, never reinforce victimhood – even if nine-tenths of the bad things that happened to them are someone else’s fault, focus on the one-tenth in which their actions mattered.

Rather than attempt to develop existential psychotherapy curriculums, I believe it is preferable to supplement the education of all well-trained dynamic therapists by increasing their sensibility to existential issues. Yalom’s negative statements about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) might not enjoy The Gift of Therapy. A book aimed at enriching the therapeutic process for a new generation of patients and counselors, Yalom’s Gift of Therapy is an entertaining, informative, and insightful read for anyone with an interest in the subject. At once startlingly profound and irresistibly practical, Yalom's insights — let the patient matter to you; create a new kind of therapy for each patient; how and how not to use self-disclosure — will help enrich the therapeutic process for both patient and counselor. Loved the inclusion of the Harry Stack Sullivan quote describing therapy as "a discussion of two people, one of them more anxious than the other.

Of course, he advises therapists to use dreams in their sessions; however, he’s not that keen on a deep, full interpretation such as the one of Irma’s dream in Freud’s seminal book on the subject. Process, on the other hand, refers to the “interpersonal relationship between the patient and the therapist.

As long as he denies his own agency, real change is unlikely because his attention will be directed toward changing his environment rather than himself. It is not meant to be a structured "cookbook" or set of formulas blueprinting the course of psychotherapy.
