The album itself follows up Videotape and sticks with the piano as the fundamental part of most of the songs, and only really ever backtracks from this twice, with the first time making sense and them following it up with MK2, which helps keep the general mood, and the second time being Bangers + Mash, which I need to talk about because Bangers + Mash and 4 Minute Warning are the only reason this album isn't a 10/10.

The full version has 10 songs (8 from the regular In Rainbows album and 2 from the bonus cd included with some vinyl editions). The whole thing is an extended metaphor, of course, and, this being Radiohead, it's heavy-handed in its way, but it's also a fitting close to such a human album. Its surprisingly cohesive as an album experience up until Bangers + Mash, which I will get to in a bit, but those first six songs are just straight up some of the best cohesion I've heard in any album, with the only other Radiohead album being able to rival its cohesion being Kid A. EMI executives including Keith Wozencroft, who had signed Radiohead to EMI, travelled regularly to Radiohead's Oxfordshire studio in hopes of negotiating a new contract. The pay-what-you-want release, the first for a major musical act, attracted international media attention and sparked debate about the implications for the music industry. Though it goes nowhere, "Go Slowly"'s slow burn would have fit on the proper album-- for that matter, it could've been an outtake from any of their last four records.
