I think how Mackie charts how running helped her come to terms with her anxiety and develop coping mechanisms was excellently done. But through her inspiring personal story and realistic approach she's already inspired thousands of men and women to manage their mental health through exercise. Mackie explores how running improves your self esteem, quells anxiety and generally improves every aspect of life.A brilliant, compassionate insight into both mental illness and exercise , Bella Mackie’s Jog On will act as a comfort – and a spur – to so many. The book encourages you to see other benefits to running other than weight loss, and it’s something I’ve never considered before. Carrie Fisher's quote in Jog On gave a good reason why I should not skip my daily exercise, reading and wiring. The author has been through a lot and she never sugar coated things or pretended they were easier than they were. I'm generally not that much of an nonfiction reader so I guess me not being the biggest fan of this memoir isn't all that surprising.

Mackie's experiences with running and mental health are similar to my own, thus making this a particularly interesting read.As someone who often feels I should run more, this helped me realise that I can run more when I want to, but should also use running in a way that benefits me, and not as a way of bargaining with myself or forcing myself on bad days. Mackie discusses running from different perspectives, including how to run, how it feels, why run, running solo or in groups, how exercise has been gentrified (thereby seeming inaccessible to many) and how to pick yourself up from disappointments. It also felt like it could have been condensed into a shorter book as essentially her advice is to run and the other people she asked agreed too. You don't have to have fancy kit, you don't need to aim for personal bests, you don't need to run marathons and you can be clumsy (as I am). In Jog On, Bella explains with hilarious and unfiltered honesty how she used running to battle crippling anxiety and depression, without having to sacrifice her main loves: booze, cigarettes and ice cream.

The tips for beginner runners at the end of the book are sensible and realistic for complete beginners and/or those with little confidence in their abilities.
