Illustrator Ganucheau's black, white, and blue art is drawn in a simple, naturalistic style with manga-adjacent expressions that suit the story. However, there are shortcomings: Where the original text may use parentheticals and asides to progress the story, the occasional appearance of parentheses in speech bubbles are a distracting reminder that comics utilize storytelling tools that haven’t been fully adopted here. I think with queer stories we’re making our way to an age where stories like Bloom are becoming more common and that’s very exciting. At 368 pages it’s a solid read with enough space to let the characters breathe and tell a full story. I was honestly worried that my e-copy of Bloom was malfunctioning and it took me a while to figure out that.

You can literally smell the tantalizing aroma of fresh-baked goods in the air, amplified by the sweetly lusty sideways glances Ari and Hector toss at one another. plus his circle of friends on occasion behave badly, so please don't mistake this for one long cheesy grin. High school may have ended, but Ari is stuck with sourdough starter at his family’s bakery instead of summer gigs in the city with his band. The artist’s use of color is especially striking: His battle scenes are ample, bloodily scarlet affairs, and Polyphemus’s cave is a stifling orange; he depicts the underworld as a colorless, mirthless void, domestic spaces in warm tans, the all-encircling sea in a light Mediterranean blue and some of the far-away islands in almost tangibly growing greens. For Ari and Hector, the focus is on their lives and struggles and letting their love bloom in a sweet and simple way. The aquamarine colouring marries with protagonist Ari’s depression and the seaside location, and the artwork is beautiful. Families may also find this book resourceful if they are wanted to normalize queer relationships within their family unit. People prepare meals together, eat together as a family, go out to eat on first dates, celebrate milestones at restaurants, build careers out of food, farming, gardening, harvesting. Let's talk about graphic novels – from action-packed adventures to intimate memoirs, from meticulous non-fiction to wild surrealism!

Ari’s mom and dad own a bakery and they want their son to continue to live with them and help keep the business afloat, instead of running off with his friends to start a band in the big city. Ganucheau's art, in black ink with varying shades of blue, mixes traditional paneling with beautiful double-page spreads of detailed baking scenes, where the panels sometimes take on the shape of braided loaves. Hector has a clearer idea about what he wants because he's experienced what he doesn't want: a relationship which wasn't in synch but unhealthily reliant and cloyingly clingy. I am also a huge movie buff and my other interests include listening to music, spending time with my dog Drax, reading, and blogging. They want him to stay and help with the bakery, but he has his own musical dreams, and so this graphic novel is also about his journey to figure out who he is and what he wants to do. We can surely all relate to that initial bewilderment: the butterfly-in-your-heart which can take months to figure out; the gut-churning hollow during any brief absence and the yearning for more in the meantime; the not-knowing whether your acute sensations are reciprocated in any way at all.All of our books are 100% brand new, unread and purchased directly from the publishers in bulk allowing us to pass the huge savings on to you! In any event, there is something undeniably powerful — and important — in having a father acknowledge his son’s homosexuality in such a loving and positive way. Savanna's has also adapted the novel 'Turtle in Paradise' into a graphic novel that has a release of May 2021 from Random House Graphic. The story could be interpreted as a coming out story, but the authors intentionally take the focus of the story in a different direction.
