Those who know him know he has never told a lie in his life—“Never be the one to tell lies, Nico,” his grandfather teaches him.

The level of detail in the atmospheric and evocative descriptions was absolutely amazing; the sticky cloying heat of the Bannin Bay, the salt encrusted seafarers and the dizzingly numerous dangers lurking amongst mangroves was utterly transportive.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Pan Macmillan for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly. Lawhon’s fifth work of historical fiction is inspired by the true story and diaries of midwife Martha Ballard of Hallowell, Maine, a character she brings to life brilliantly here. For readers of The Light Between Oceans and The Island of Sea Women, a feminist adventure story set against the backdrop of the dangerous pearl diving industry in 19th-century Western Australia, about a young English woman who sets off to uncover the truth about the disappearance of her eccentric father. It was 1886 when Eliza Brightwell and her family arrived in Bannin Bay, Western Australia from England.

Eliza is suicidal in her mission to find her father and towards the end of the story, she really does not care if she lives. As far as a historical fiction work goes, it rates high for me in that I learned a lot about this piece of history and also the pearling industry. We collaborate with authors across all adult fiction genres, and also handle children’s books, young adult and cross-over fiction. The vessel is one of the last to come in and she soon learns from her brother that their father has disappeared.
