The third part part I just endured unable to suspend disbelief at all as the cannibles attack and they fight them off with mustard gas. really good book, not dated and tackles the real issues faced by humanity after such a catastrophic event.

I would believe that this book would have a very different reaction if I had read it when it first came out (and I wish I had!

Certainly, the various scenarios seemed well-reasoned both in the science sense (impact earthquakes, tsunamis, cloud cover) and the political sense (protecting the defense system, attacking other countries).

Tim mentions in the epilogue that Forrester died over the winter, a direct result of those events being higher priority than manufacturing insulin. Senator Jellison's aide, Al Hardy, also doesn't deny that he's in love with Maureen when confronted by Harvey, but admits freely that it means nothing; Maureen's husband will be the Senator's successor, and Hardy knows that can't be him.

Some people may have difficulty with the first several hours up until right before the comet makes landfall. In the epilogue, after Jellison's death, Tim notes that Harvey and Maureen "would have to come to terms" with the Colorado Springs group, implying either that either they do have that authority or that they're powerful enough to be respected anyway. So much effort went into making the impact of the comet hitting the Earth so tangible and believable, that I sat on the edge of my seat reading well into the night for a solid week.
