Description

Fawcett had a reputation for being fearless, capable of wading into a rain of poison arrows to make peace with the warriors who were firing them. There were many attempts by later explorers of varying levels of expertise to find Fawcett, or at least to learn definitively of his fate. I read this in anticipation of a book talk and am now dying to find out why this particular work was chosen.

Throughout the whole book, Grann maintains an objective style that is to the point and well-organized. For years after he disappeared, rumors emerged from the jungle of blond-haired, blue-eyed children, supposedly his offsprig, being spotted in tribal enclaves. The narrative in River of Doubt was more focused than this novel, but Millard was talking about one trip, not multiple trips or explorers. The adaptation, directed by James Gray, who also wrote the screenplay, [13] premiered on October 15, 2016, at the 54th New York Film Festival. We get to see the man take dangerous and almost superhuman treks into the wilderness with an almost blatant disregard for those who come with him.

His superb writing style, his skills as a reporter, his masterful use of historical and scientific documents, and his stunning storytelling ability are on full display here, producing an endlessly absorbing tale about a magical subject that captivates from start to finish.

Along with Antarctica, it remained beyond the reach of all but a handful of adventurers, of whom Fawcett was the most celebrated.

The tid-bits about the jungle, mentioned by other reviewers on Goodreads, I first learned about in The River of Doubt by Candice Millard. The Lost City of Z was optioned by Brad Pitt’s Plan B production company and Paramount Pictures in 2010. Over eighteen thousand feet high in the Andes, amid snow and clouds, it emerges through a rocky seam--a trickle of crystal water.

And while Fawcett was certainly no gold hunter, his mounting obsession with the lost city of "Z" had me truly wondering just what could be out in that dense and surprisingly delicate land of life. As you read The Lost City of Z you begin to form the opinion that "dead" is the only possible outcome for anyone foolish enough to set foot in the jungle. Raleigh, whose father had been a surgeon in the Royal Navy, was also a muscular young man, known to have a joyful and clownish nature. His charisma and competence were sufficient to garner the backing of the Royal Geological Society and later the U.
