Description

Quite a neat way of doing this is gluing a plastic carrier bag to the top of the loft hatch (covering as much of the loft hatch as you can without going over any of the edges. The aim isn’t to completely seal your home, but to achieve a balance between necessary ventilation without excessive loss of heat. Modern polystyrene has a fire retardent, and on a draughtproof loft hatch by the time fire has got into the loft the house is a goner anyway (and so would anyone still in it be). And likewise, if you have a hinged hatch that swings downwards but rests against a post within the hatch casing/frame when shut then you’d apply the strip around that post. If we’re not installing something like a Fakro loft ladder that comes with a fully-insulated hatch and frame then we build one bespoke.

Good use of draft proofing could reduce your air permeability to around 8-10 metres cubed per hour which is a good low-cost way of reducing you heating bills.Although you'll rarely feel cold draughts coming down chimneys (because warm air rises up the chimney, rather than cold air being drawn down) you can lose considerable amounts of heat through the 'stack effect'. The hatch then rests against that post when shut and it’s on that post that we apply a rubber ‘P’ seal as illustrated in the diagram below. Less heating means using less energy, so you can do your bit for the environment by draught-proofing your loft too.

Millions of people would have to double their incomes to escape financial hardship, says anti-poverty charity Joseph Rowntree Foundation in a new report published today. These weatherstrips also help to keep the internal air in the property and help with energy saving costs on heating or air conditioning. Existing drop-down hatches with attached ladders can be treated in the same way as option 2, but care will be needed to ensure the insulation does not interfere with the mechanism of the ladder. Even when you have a fully insulated loft with boarding you should still have air flowing through the gap between the flooring insulation and the underside of that boarding. My ladders are fully clear of the hatch when closed so I should be able to glue on solid insulation.

Cut four pieces of Polystyrene Rigid Insulation about 1/2 inch smaller than the dimensions of the hatch. The bright yellow spot in the centre of the image is the bathroom extractor fan – an example of controlled ventilation that you'd be ill-advised to seal. Some years ago I made some 'sausage like' draught excluders of plastic stuffed with loft insulation and pinned them around the framework. All plumbing or mechanical connections need to be sealed using a rigid or flexible waterproof barrier. All featuring an adhesive backing down one side for easy installation, they're compliant with British Standard 476-22 having been fully tested, and have all the relevant approvals. It fell on me once but that was due to high wind flow when a builder was breaking through the gable wall. I just used the self adhesive foam strip onto the frame so it compresses against the ply hatch when closed.
