Between the gorgeous writing and the incredible class commentary and Henry Li, if I wasn't squealing into my pillow, I was near tears at feeling seen by the Chinese culture and diaspora experience woven throughout.

i quite honestly thought that the invisible part of the story would be too unbelievable for me to read, but the author wrote it beautifully. OF COURSE HE HAS AN ENGLISH ACCENT, LOOKS LIKE LITERAL ART AND HE’S SMART- SMART ENOUGH TO WIN JEOPARDY SMART😩! i thought this was just a cute romance, which it was not 😭 that's my own fault, though, because the synopsis pretty accurately sums up the book.gasp* but i loved him sm fr, he was so sweet and studious and cute and I WOULD DIE FOR HIM did i mention? love love love how it beautifully woven into the story, never overpowering but rather subtly building up with a slow burn. she's witty, sarcastic, knows what she wants, and is completely oblivious to the fact that henry likes her! I do like how Alice’s developing friendships with Henry and Chanel helped her integrate a bit more deeply into the school social life. Fantasy meets enemies to lovers romance with powerful messages made me enjoy my reading a lot more than I expected.

frustration grows as the semester ends, worsened by an award ceremony and encounters with her nemesis, henry.

i had expected a more profound exploration of the enchanting aspects in this supposedly ya fantasy/ romance novel. now i am convinced that this book was written by me because funfact my bf and i had, almost the exact same dynamic, as henry and alice. Even Alice’s teachers were interesting, with one of them being invested in Alice’s dreams even if she doesn’t see them herself at first. idk how it gets better than this 😍 you take my hand and drag me headfirst, fearless (stop i rlly thought i did something there).

IT’S LIKE ANN LIANG LOOKED IN MY MIND, AT THE BOY I’VE ALWAYS WANTED AND THEN ✨BAM✨ THE UNIVERSE SENDS ME THIS BOOK AS AN APOLOGY FOR THE TRASH GUYS MY AGE AND MY LAME UNROMANTIC HIGH SCHOOL YEARS. alice believes this power can solve her financial struggles, but soon learns it comes with consequences. the way he’s always trying to get on alice’s nerves was so adorable ahh the fact they were academic rivals but he has a photo of him and alice on his desk?

there was a time in hs when i also broke down in front of a history/social studies teacher because i thought i did bad on a test. their dynamic was a bit distant at the beginning, mainly because alice aimed to be friendly, not to make friends. Chanel was also a great character, she was so nice and friendly and seems like she would make a great friend, but none of these characters are real which pains me to type out. I’ve spent my whole life longing to be seen, but I’ve also come to realize that when people look too closely, they inevitably notice the ugly parts too, like how the tiny cracks on a polished vase only become visible under scrutiny. Alice is the only scholarship student in this elite boarding school, and even then, her scholarship doesn’t cover the entire cost.
