Description

Huw was by now a young adult already making a living as a carpenter and the town was soon gossiping about their living situations. Their relationship consisted entirely of a few kisses and half-hearted promises over the course of a week. As the industrial revolution transformed Britain, the coal-mining regions of South Wales fairly basked in prosperity. None of the leading players was Welsh (though Welsh actor Rhys Williams made his screen debut in the film in a minor role).

It reminds us of the life we are capable of living and contrasts it with the life we choose to live. And while the book did have its share of tragedy (something that we are prepared for from the start for the story is told in retrospect), it also had so much more, including plenty of moments of humour and plenty that was rather heartwarming. That gives a feeling of only barely repressed menace throughout the whole book, not particularly needed when everyone is going down badly maintained pits, struggling against the mine owners or struggling at school against bullies and anti-Welsh sentiment. Merddyn Gruffydd, the preacher who is loved by Angharad, helps Huw recover from his illness, and is supportive of the Morgans.

If you do get the novel, immerse yourself in the storytelling, enjoy the read and be prepared to spend a few days afterwards reminiscing your own past. Considering you thought this was a difficult book to review, you’ve done an excellent job of explaining why its such a good one to read. I started the book without reading (or rather rereading) the blurb, and had gone in expecting a mostly tragic tale. It was delightful to just read about Huw growing up and his everyday life in the valley and the simplicity and struggle of it all.The whole thing was daft, if their courtship had been longer or they'd been childhood sweethearts or something then her Owen-related madness/death might have been plausible but that wasn't the case.
