When using the campfire, how did you keep the outdoors, and each other, safe while you were cooking? Whichever theory you wish to attach to your Hot Cross Buns, we can all agree these are the seasonal treat of the holidays. I mixed them in the Thermomix last night, transferred the dough to a glass bowl and put it in the fridge. Packed full of juicy fruit, our Plant Kitchen vegan hot cross buns feature a unique spice blend and an irresistible texture.

Once the dough has come together turn onto a flat surface and knead for 15 minutes, until your dough is smooth and vital.Place the eggs and egg yolks into a large bowl and whisk gently to combine (try not to incorporate too much air as you go). Everyone can add any toppings if they’d like them, such as butter or jam, then make sure the Hot Cross Buns have cooled down before you tuck in. After having made another recipe for hot cross buns (which was not very successful) decided not to be deterred and gave this one a go. With Tangzhong, water and flour are cooked together at a ratio of 5:1 (these ratios can vary depending on whose recipe you are using but these are the two most popular). Working with one piece of dough at a time, fold the outer edges of the dough into the middle, doing this a few times to create some tension, pinching the seam to seal.

Scrape into a small bowl and cover with a piece of clingfilm, to prevent a skin from forming, and set aside until cool. Made with a rich, dark chocolate dough and studded with milk and dark chocolate chunks, our extremely chocolatey hot cross buns are a brilliant alternative for anyone who isn't a fan of the traditional fruity versions.

Tip out onto a lightly floured surface and knead into a ball then place in a greased bowl and leave to rise, covered in a shower cap or plate, in a warm place until doubled in size. As the hot cross buns are an annual event I like to have a play around with my recipe every year, making them vegan one year, playing with the flavours the next. Packed full of juicy sultanas and currants, orange and lemon peel and a unique spice blend, our luxury hot cross buns are amazing served lightly toasted with lashings of butter. The next day, place 200g of your flour, the yeast and the milk in a large bowl and gently mix to a creamy batter. Add the orange juice and sugar to a small pan and cook together just until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture has come to a simmer.

Toast 2 hot cross buns and place in a shallow bowl, then pour over 150ml milk and leave to soak for 30 minutes. These Made Without wheat hot cross buns are gluten-free, but give you the satisfying texture and signature hot cross bun flavour you crave with orange-soaked mixed vine fruits and spices. If you need a sheltered cooking area, consider an open sided gazebo, dining shelter or a marquee that has sufficient air circulation and ventilation.Wet towel gets cold which can compromise the dough rising, a plate or pot lid doesn’t seal enough to trap warmth and humidity. Don’t forget to make sure all young people and adults involved in the activity know how to take part safely. Use 2 cups instead of the sultanas (any more and you end up with quite a gooey melted chocolate centre! Here, you mix a proportion of your flour with the yeast and liquid (milk, in this instance), and leave it to ferment for a period of time. Place the buns onto a parchment lined baking tray, a little apart, and cover lightly with clingfilm or a damp kitchen towel.

Just one thing I must be strict about: you do need to use proper bread flour here, not the usual plain. If someone’s struggling with the baking section of this activity, they could work with a partner, so they can help each other. By effort, I don't mean you need to be hugely active or expert to make these; you just need the patience to sit around while they rise and the faith to believe they will.No-knead Hot Cross Buns are exactly as the name says – Hot Cross Buns that are made without kneading the dough. My glaze is a slightly sweetened frothed egg white which is applied before baking and before the traditional crosses.
