Don't worry if they have to bend their legs when seated; it's your child’s head height and weight that should guide you.

It rotates so you can put your child in and take them out easily, it is fitted using ISOFIX, but has the option to fit with a car seatbelt, it's rear-facing and it is suitable from birth until your child is 12 (or 36kg). It’s also quite bulky and if someone needs to sit in the middle car seat, they may be tight on space. Often referred to as a multi group car seat, these can be a great choice for saving money without compromising on safety.

Our advice is to avoid keeping babies, particularly very young ones, in car seats any longer than absolutely necessary and never for sleeping inside the house. As I had no Plan B, the lovely Dilip patiently talked us through the different options, giving so much the opposite of a hard sell that I wouldn’t have spent my money anywhere else. Car seats approved to the newer R129 regulations that are also multi-group are rarer, although you may find some retailers define extended rear-facing car seats (that take your child from birth to four years) as multi-group. When you're ready to travel with your baby, the harness must be tight enough so that two fingers, at most, can just be inserted under the shoulder straps against your baby's collarbone. Updated to add: This year we have used the Bubblebum for my 8 year old daughter on a 2 week holiday in America and for a trip to Iceland whilst there and it really helped position the seatbelt better for her and gave us reassurance.

Forward-facing seats tend to be the most widely available Group 1 car seats, but they're not for children 9kg and under. This is when their body proportions are starting to be more like that of a small adult and they can sit properly in the vehicle seat. No matter how old your baby is, they will be far better protected if they stay in a rear-facing seat, so the experts highly recommend it. If your baby is big for their age and likely to reach the lower limits sooner, a rear-facing seat with higher limits will keep them safer for longer.Trustworthiness and safety are the two priorities when making a decision, and at Direct4Baby we know how important these two factors are to parents choosing a car seat.
