The fact that the are real and that they have the rhyme that goes through the chapters of the book is even more creepy. On the YA stuff, I do feel it’s very important that reading and enjoying fiction stays healthy and strong among young people. In much the same way of traditional Gothic texts, that I so adore, the 'haunted mansion' setting fills this book with shadowed corners and creaking stairs that both heighten the actual horrors contained there and provide additional fears, real and imaged, for the reader to obsess over. The story from the first half of the book wasn’t really linked to the rest; it needed more explanations.

I picked this one up for my amazing niece (youngest of the two by 12 minutes) while I was visiting her in Sydney.I was also lucky enough to get my copy signed by Bell at YALC earlier on in the year, so I was even more excited to pick it up. Overall, there were enough twists to make it an engaging little read that, most importantly, did send shivers down my spine a few times. Her cheerful tone had disappeared for the first time since I’d arrived so I didn’t dare ask any more questions. After reading this, don’t forget tomorrow to check out the other reviews posted as part of Patti Abbott’s Friday’s Forgotten Books meme over at her fab Pattinase blog. In fact, my only minor "complaint" would be that I would have liked to have learned more about the origin of the Frozen Charlotte dolls, and how/why they were introduced in the first place.

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Sophie is the main character of the book and the tragedy that strikes her friend Jay after messing around with a Ouija board app is what spurs her onto finding the ghost of her dead cousin. It was surprisingly heartening to see the horror genre portrayed so brilliantly and vividly in such a contemporary setting and with such a young cast of characters. Jay was a beloved friend who could have become a beloved boyfriend and the missed chance is what propels Sophie to put herself in danger, despite her better judgement. From this pulse-quickening beginning the story does not let up any of its pace until the final page if turned.
