For Alexa and I, doing this book of fairy tales was almost the most accurate reflection of the world around us today. I was excited for some fairy tales gone rogue, especially being that i didn’t grow up with the originals, but the text is pretty much useless. Indeed, the interplay of text and images throughout the book has less in common with engravings from a well-thumbed tome of old fairy tales than with something like Madonna’s infamous Fabien Baron–designed, Steven Meisel–lensed publication, Sex. The photos are gorgeous and the aesthetic sucked me in immediately… an overall let down even though I enjoyed the art. Once upon a time, in the far-off kingdom of Los Angeles in the summer of 2020, photographer Petra Collins and Euphoria star Alexa Demie found love at first sight.

One photo shoot and a pair of prosthetic elf ears later, the pair decided to push the project further, eventually crafting nine individual fables with a touch of something both sinister and seductive. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others.

Featuring illustrations by Evita Flores, deceivingly innocent, coloured-pencil drawings show butterflies in trees, witches and flying mice, a cottage in flames, and rope-wrapped mermaids accepting their fate. While Collins was mostly raised in the suburbs of Toronto, her mother fled Hungary in the 1980s, when it was still under Soviet rule. The Fairy Talesphotography book was highly anticipated by fans, imitated by artists before its release, and sits in the niche TikTok subcultures of fairy-core, dark feminine energy and the reclaiming of hyper-feminine aesthetics. Fairy Tales is a picture book about mystical creatures, accompanied with short stories about each one of them.Petra and Alexa’s chapters of elves, mermaids, sirens, water sprites, fallen angels, fairies, witches, and banshees blend their own stories with retold fairy tales. Part of the reason we did these characters is that everyone, especially because of the pandemic, has been living on the internet more than they ever have,” Collins notes. It explores the femininity and sexuality of mythological beings, but in the context of very human spaces, such as teenage bedrooms, medical facilities, parking lots and exotic dancing clubs. Hungary as a nation was dealing with being under a Soviet regime, so a lot of that work came out of collective trauma. It was super cathartic because I hadn’t created artwork since my last book, and there was a real sense of discovery where we were just playing.

I think this book is a great signifier of the zeitgeist and the challenges womxn face today, particularly on social media and image-based communications. Demie represents womxn through different lenses, all with outcomes of alienation and objectification. This trope recurs throughout the book, challenging ideas of empowerment and restriction, symbolic of the patriarchy and our power to repurpose oppressive devices. Initially bought for the photos, obviously, so I didnt expect there to be multiple stories, and they honestly exceeded my expectations.Collins has created a style that will go down in history as one that people can only hope to try to recreate. In the Brothers Grimm version of Rapunzel, it’s hinted that the young woman has been locked away in a tower for her promiscuity, while the 17th-century Italian version of Sleeping Beauty sees the central character impregnated by the king during her slumber.

The photos combine elements of camp, prosthetics, and shibari in a surreal update to the imagery of the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, Charles Perrault, and others. The darker European folklorists, from Charles Perrault to Hans Christian Andersen, spun stories with little resemblance to the Disney-sanitized versions we grew up on: The queen in Snow White wished to devour the girl’s lungs and liver, for example, and the evil stepsisters in Cinderella cut off their toes with a knife to fit into the glass slipper. For both Collins and Demie, the project was rooted in the darker corners of the fairy tales that they grew up with.

This collaboration sees Alexa Demie embody empowered femme mythical beings in a world like ours today.
