Titles are as follows "The Duchess of Padua", "Lady Windermere's Fan", "Miscellanies", "The Picture of Dorian Gray", "Reviews", "Salome A Florentine Tragedy, and Vera". In 1895, following his libel action against the Marquess of Queesberry, Wilde was sentenced to two years' imprisonment for homosexual conduct, as a result of which he wrote The Ballad of Reading Gaol (1898), and his confessional letter De Profundis (1905). On May 29, 1884, Oscar married Constance Lloyd (died 1898), daughter of wealthy Queen’s Counsel Horace Lloyd. This had much to do with the novel’s homoerotic overtones, which caused something of a sensation amongst Victorian critics.

In many ways it is a traditional fairy tale with an obvious moral - a poor family finds an abandoned baby and raises him to be a beautiful boy.The nineteenth century dislike of romanticism is the rage of Caliban not seeing his own face in a glass. Lord Henry stroked his pointed brown beard and tapped the toe of his patent-leather boot with a tasselled ebony cane. It is not he who is revealed by the painter; it is rather the painter who, on the coloured canvas, reveals himself. Yes; she is a peacock in everything but beauty, said Lord Henry, pulling the daisy to bits with his long nervous fingers.

I was disappointed to find that the popular culture image of Dorian Grey didn't quite live up to the actual written depiction of him. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Someday I will show the world what it is; and for that reason the world shall never see my portrait of Dorian Gray. Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was born on the 16th October 1854 and died on the 30th November 1900.Illustrated with many fascinating photographs, the book includes introductions to each section by Merlin Holland (Oscar’s grandson), Owen Dudley Edwards, Declan Kiberd and Terence Brown.

First, 'De Profundis', his letter to his lover, is an insightful take upon his fate - the pain of a man looked upon, ruined and humiliated, who nevertheless has the unforgiving lucidity to don't spare himself for his mistakes. And in the spirit of complete honesty, I actually didn’t read the other essays included in the collection - Intentions and The Soul of Man Under Socialism - as I knew they wouldn’t interest me, and so they have not affected my rating. Known for his biting wit, he became one of the most successful playwrights of the late Victorian era in London, and one of the greatest celebrities . With this beautiful Collectible Edition, you can enjoy Wilde’s enduring literary legacy again and again.I am quite sure I shall understand it, he replied, gazing intently at the little golden, white-feathered disk, and as for believing things, I can believe anything, provided that it is quite incredible. He was bareheaded, and the leaves had tossed his rebellious curls and tangled all their gilded threads. This project, which will draw the Oxford University Press Complete Works of Oscar Wilde to a conclusion, involves editing his famous epigrams, both in their published and manuscript forms, as well as a group of works that deserve to be better known among scholars and general readers: the lectures he delivered to many different audiences in Canada, England, Ireland, and the United States during the 1880s; numerous unpublished essays and reviews; and - perhaps most important - several unfinished dramas, which include several courageous plays that address sensitive topics such as incest, adultery, and illegitimacy.
