Using the miracle grow compost/seed mix worked really well, but unfortunately there is no way to actually tell how many seeds are in the measured compost, so it’s a bit of a gamble. If you’re having trouble finding vendors, you can use the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation’s Native Plant, Seed and Services Directory. Seed bombing private property other than yours can cause the destruction of property and it is illegally dumping.

Pour in your seeds in a ratio of 3:1 in relation to the clay mix and combine with your hands or a mixing spoon. While you might want to get out for a neighborhood walk and toss seed bombs all over the place (and we certainly can’t blame you for that) you want to exercise some discrimination about where you do this. One important caveat before you make seed bombs and spread seed bombs: avoid at all costs using seeds from species that are invasive to your locality. Ive made clay with local clay at 4 places between cali and washington, and suspect that color is not important, but powdering the clay IS important as it creates a more consistent ball that does not break apart in quickly rain, but melts over time.

Seal the opening of the clay by pinching it shut, encasing the soil and seed mixture within the clay. Native seeds are most likely to thrive in your home environment and will provide habitat and sustenance for local fauna.

There are many of different ways to make seed bombs, and we’ll cover a few of them, including the Fukuoka Method — which is perhaps the best way to seed bomb. Wildflower seed bombs are not only a breeze to create, they also make a great affordable handmade gift when packaged in hand-stamped muslin pouches. The mixture of clay and wool compost will dry out to preserve the seeds in perfect conditions to burst into life when they are lobbed into barren areas that could do with seeding with wildflowers.Once the orbs have dried, just scatter them in the garden and wait for the seeds to break through the soil—or gift them to your favorite gardener. All seed is responsibly sourced in the UK from Flora Locale accredited suppliers, we only ever use peat-free compost and our steel tins are manufactured in London (with the help of a solar farm on the factory roof). Think this would go down a treat in our outdoor areas and liven up National School Grounds Week which is happening next week. This should make you a nice pile of damp soil which can be rolled into ball shapes roughly one inch in diameter. To use them, toss in hard to reach areas (only in areas where you have permission to do so) or place them in your garden and water frequently for a few weeks until the clay washes away.

Learn how to make a seed bomb using air dry clay – because when it comes to bees, every flower counts. Working with a small amount of soil mixture at a time, roll the mixture between your palms until it forms a smooth ball. Seed balls with finely sieved compost are so easy to roll and the finer compost helps hold the seed ball together and also provides better seed-matrix contact. Note: Using larger seeds can make it more difficult to roll uniformly-shaped seed bombs, so you may want to try smaller-sized seeds first. While this is certainly not an exhaustive list of ways to make seed bombs, it does cover the classic clay method and a few innovations on that technique.
