It’s very easy drinking, and it is understandable why this beer skyrocketed in popularity around the world. It is believed that the history of the Laughing Buddha bottle design, known as Budai, was a Chan buddhist monk who lived in China around 1,000 years ago. The beer is sold in bottled and canned form and is imported by Sage Beverages, headquartered in Carlsbad, California.

The buddha-shaped bottles have initiated a number of Do it yourself projects, being repurposed into everything from candle holders to soap dispensers. The company worked with Noble Environmental Technologies and Walmart to develop a sustainable point-of-purchase display that supported the supermarkets commitment to reach zero landfill waste by 2025.Although I can’t speak for the US being a resident of the UK, but I hadn’t heard of this lager before. He would travel around teaching the Dharma to the people and provide them with goodies he collected on his travels. If you go to Wagamamas however, you can also find it exclusively (in the UK) in recognisable stylish light blue cans, with branding that aligns with the ethos of luckiness. The Lucky Beer Co leant into this, promoting that preserving the bottle and repurposing it after drinking means ‘Your last sip is your first step to external luckiness’. They collaborated on a large scale to ensure that the glass bottles were made from 100% recycled materials, and was 100% certified bio-based, thereby reducing material use and their carbon footprint.

The “Laughing Buddha” depicted on Lucky Buddha beer is actually not THE Buddha and therefore not religious but cultural. Its all about the Lucky Buddha experience, from the tactile carved glass, to the mood-lifting, gleeful Buddha grin, to the discovery of four good-luck symbols (for good fortune, happiness, longevity and prosperity) on the bottom of the bottle. The empty bottles have been known to be used in arts and craft projects such as making vases and lamps. The Lucky Buddha Beer bottle is modeled as the seated laughing Buddha holding a large gold ingot above his head. The iconicity of this bottle also sparked a range of sustainable upcycling possibilities of the Lucky Buddha bottles, with many reusing them as vases or ornaments (once finished drinking! Whether at a barbecue with friends or relaxing after a long day, this beer is the perfect companion for moments of celebration and relaxation.
