Description

Beautiful and shocking, Bad Fruit is as compulsive as it is thought-provoking, as nuanced as it is explosive.

But as home truths creep out of the shadows, Lily must recast everything: what if her house isn’t a home – but a prison? Mình bắt đầu cảm thấy tồi tệ bởi những gì bà May đã ảnh hưởng đến những đứa con của bà ta, phải nói là cực kỳ tồi tệ. This is such a well done character-driven suspense with some dark themes that will keep you guessing until the end.

While her brother, sister and even father are the ones to put her on edge – triggering both emotional and physical outbursts – it is Lily’s job to maintain peace. Even by the end of the book, the family dynamic is still not quite unravelled, showing how sometimes there aren't easy answers. But Lily’s starting to have some breaks from reality and flashbacks from a past she’s not sure are from her own life . There is such intensity to the writing, as Ella King explores this part of their lives, and it really pulled me into the story, keeping me hooked right the way through. Bad Fruit occupies that liminal space between psychological thriller and horror, beautifully written and incredibly disturbing. It’s a very dark story, but the characters and their relationships with one another are so perfectly written that I fell head and soul into this book and read it in one sitting. She has a passion for encouraging others to eat well in simple, practical ways that are realistic for the whole family. She is now fighting for her sense of self and independence, but realizes this will need to progress much faster than she anticipated and will need to figure out who is truly there to help her. The descriptions, of a sweaty, oppressive summer in Greenwich, juxtaposed against the cultural roots of Singapore, leap off the page. I don't want to reveal too much about my family life—I mean I'm wearing a ski mask in my profile pic so that should give you an idea of my desire to be incognito—but this particular story was difficile to get through.

A masterful exploration of mothers and daughters, inherited trauma and the race to break its devastating cycle, BAD FRUIT will leave readers breathlessly questioning their own notions of femininity, race and redemption.During this sticky summer, Lily starts to have disturbing hallucinations or flashbacks and she has to try and work out what’s real and what’s not and if her mother has been lying about her past. With Lily and her mama so vividly painted from the start, Bad Fruit quickly grips you, unfolding a complex family dynamic and a girl starting to question what she thought she knew.
