The Security Services will be interested when one of their own – even if nominally retired – is murdered. Fair play to Peter Robinson: in this story, Banks becomes embroiled with the spooks (MI5/MI6) and we all know the rules of literary engagement; you can't win against these people.

Poor buggers, Annie thought as she tottered down the slope behind the patrol officer, arms out to keep her balance.Well-preserved in the peat, Isla Matheson—missing for the better part of two decades—is revealed to a shocked island community. The explosion of the alien power plant was detected by the US space agency, and before long an American rocket lands near the hidden base, but Darzek, forbidden from signalling his countrymen, can only watch them on a viewscreen as they pass mere meters from the hidden base in which he will soon die! can't get along, how can humans be expected to get along with the countless far more different alien civilizations they will encounter beyond the Solar System? But as similarities between the two cases grow, could it be that Jack caught the wrong man all those years ago?

If I didn't know better, I'd say this is a novel about Banks gradually losing touch with reality and probably a good deal of his cognitive ability as well. The detective, in a nick of time, does save the day, not only preserving his own skin and that of his five extra-terrestrial buddies, but even convincing the galactic civilization to permit humanity to retain its newly developed teleporter technology. Darzek reappears in the aliens' secret base on the moon, from which a team of five of them have been interfering with Earth's development of the teleporter system. Billy's a dodgy accountant for politician and racketeer Pink Harrison, who is about to come unstuck. The characters being pursued are in a Porsche; they have a head start, and the driver is very familiar with the road.Because Yorkshire is Banks' home base, it makes for a dramatic contrast between the innate picturesque beauty of the county and the tough underbelly of the people who live on the housing estates outside the tourist towns, many struggling with the high crime rate and inclement weather.

That is until his wealthy partner is found murdered in the mansion they share in the 'posh' part of town. I grew up in Northern New Jersey, attended Rutgers University and then lived in New York City for over ten years. Delightful vocals, solid songwriting from begging to end, great production; And Frontal Lobe is a damn heavy track. Biggle's aliens are interesting, and their interactions with Darzek and with each other are well done; the aliens have more personality and more intriguing relationships than do any of the novel's human characters.I go to great pains to describe condition accurately, listing all flaws, sometimes with the result that the book description may not look all that attractive.
