My 8x25 "Safari Ultrasharp" is not that bad (apart from the horrible stray light control and ghosting) but the same bino in 8x30 with CF costs above 200€.

Although not built to military specification, they will provide a lifetime of use for most water enthusiasts. The Steiner Navigator Pro 7x30 is a very strong light telescope with a large pupil, which makes the viewer virtually 24 hours useful. Had my trip involved more hiking and backpacking, then yes perhaps I would once again switch back to a full compact. This new compact Navigator model is equipped with the fluid damped, shock-absorbing and most precise compass in its class.Large ocular lenses are desired for a number of reasons, which I go through in detail in this article on ocular lens size in binoculars, but one of the most important is that they make it much easier for you to line your eyes up with them. mm, I would not describe the Steiner Navigator Pro 7x30 binoculars as having a very long eye-relief, but for a mid-sized instrument, it is pretty good and should be enough for most eyeglass wearers. One other very important aspect is that NBR rubber, especially in relation to marine uses where you will often leave the binoculars on your boat, is that it also has an excellent level of resistance to sun and heat aging and so does not harden and perish as natural rubber does.

In addition, these Steiner binoculars always have razor-sharp images from 128 metres to infinity thanks to the Auto-Focus system, without the need to refocus. The binoculars have 7x magnification and feature a 30 mm lens diameter, which ensures that plenty of light reaches your eyes, rendering a bright image. The 7x magnification is the classic bird watching binocular but is also well suited for nature viewing or as a general purpose model. All this combined with the lack of having to make any sort of adjustments to the focus makes for an incredibly easy instrument to just pick up and use and was something that I really appreciated when out on the water, especially when using the binocular one-handed.

The Illusion 7×30 is designed to give a very light weight binocular coupled with exceptional clarity and brightness.

This extended field of view makes it easier to navigate safely when entering a harbor or in similar narrow environments such as when passing a bridge. One optical coating that is important to mention here for their intended marine uses is that they have a hydrophobic/aquaphobic material on the outer lens surfaces. Now turn the dioptre setting on the right ocular until you can see an entirely sharp and clear image with your right eye. To a point and whilst on a boat, the weight of your binoculars is not really an issue as unlike walking, the vessel is doing most of the carrying for you.

In moderate and even fairly low light conditions I still thought these performed as well as I had hoped and it was only in very low light at sunset that the performance noticeably drops off if you compare them to a larger instrument like an 8x42 or 7x50 for examples. It becomes clear why these binoculars are so well suited to surveillance work as they are meant for panning the sky or landscape with most everything in focus. The good news is Steiner produces a few slightly more compact options because of this, I zeroed in on their 7x30 Navigator Pro which I thought could be ideal. High Resolution BAK4 prisms ensure a brighter image throughout the range of magnifications by maximising light transmission.
