The whisky gets its distinct aroma and body from direct heating distillation, in which the pot stills are heated with finely powdered natural coal--the traditional method that is hardly ever used today, even in Scotland. Nikka's founder Masataka Taketsuru chose a valley in the Miyagi prefecture as the site for his second distillery and started its operation in 1969.

If Yoichi is the more masculine style of malt then Miyagikyo is the more feminine and often blended together for the well balanced Nikka blends.
